About
Families provide us a sense of belonging. They give identity and provide us support, peace and tranquility. A family provides for wholesome growth of its children; it is a bastion of their security. Our family is made up of the people we care about and the people who care about us. Families are the structural units of a society. Healthy families make a healthy society. In modern times, the institution of family is facing challenges, resulting in problems in community living. To build a healthy society, we need to encourage the institution of family and their healthy thriving. We also need to pay attention to those children who have been deprived of the blessing of a nurturing family.
Government of Ontario is commendable in dedicating a day as Family Day (February 16 this year) in recognition of the importance and centrality of family life. Like all other religions, family values are of paramount importance to the Muslims and therefore, the Scarborough Muslim Community especially appreciates Ontario’s initiative, by organizing a celebratory event on this occasion.
Scarborough Muslim Community extends the bonds of its families beyond its own to the community at large. Centenary Hospital in Scarborough has been a beacon of hope for our community. It has been rendering life-saving and health promoting services. There is hardly anyone in Scarborough, who can say they do not have a friend or relative who has been touched by these services. Scarborough Muslim Community feels that supporting and appreciating the Centenary Hospital is much needed and is consistent with the teachings of Islam and the example of Prophet Muhammad, may peace be upon him, who tirelessly worked hard to ease the hardship and for the betterment of the society that he lived in.
We have organized a Walkathon on this occasion to raise funds to enable Centenary Hospital to purchase essential diagnostic equipment- the Vital Signs Monitors. This event will be on the Family Day, Monday February 16, 2015 at the Scarborough Civic Centre Rotunda from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm. All the local MPs, MPPs and Councilors, including the Honorable Mayor, John Tory have been invited. Representatives of Centenary Hospital will also be present. This will be the third year that we are conducting this event. Last two events were well-attended and successful. We would like to make this year’s performance even better than before. We earnestly invite all to join us in this great cause, as an attendee or volunteer.
This event does much more than simply raises money. It is one way to help our children develop their sense of philanthropy and social responsibility. It helps them see that we’re all connected and that giving to others also makes them feel good about themselves. It is an important message that they will take home.

In addition, this event will be a fun opportunity for you, your family and friends to spend time together, be active and support a great cause. There is a free outdoor ice-rink right beside the Scarborough Civic Centre. So bring your skates and have fun. There will also be a Reptile Show for children to enjoy, at the end of the program. Of course, snacks will be served. There is no fee.
